Bad Taste in Boys

My daughter LOVES zombies. Anything zombie. She's just finished her first year in college and in fact, she loves zombies so much she wrote a college essay about zombies to get into an exlusive college club. (by the way, she did get in). She said in her essay that if the world were to have an apocalypse, she hoped it would be a zombie one (because she feels like she could have a little bit of control over what happens around her).

I just bought her two new zombie books a few days ago and told her I'd look around to see what else is out there. (Well I hadn't actually done that yet) but wha-la - while doing some of my blog visiting rounds, I saw on KT Literary's blog, that Carrie Harris' book is a zombie book!! It's called Bad Taste in Boys. Now I've seen this book, heard of it, saw the cover but did not know it was a zombie book. So anyway, I'll be getting it for my daughter for sure but Carrie is also having a contest to win a signed copy!!

Carrie has a new book trailer for her novel which is the reason for the contest.

I love the title of this book and I love the cover - so go check her out, check out her trailer AND enter her contest!

Good luck!

I'm so Happy Right Now!

I've been working on a total rewrite of my Sci/Fi Thriller WIP and after rewriting about the first 100 pages, I'm finally done with that! Yay! These are mostly all new chapters, although I was able to recyle some bits of the old chapters. (not very much though)

It makes me so happy to be able to focus completely on the revising part of it now rather than worrying about getting the story hammered out. When I first started with this rewrite, I had cut I think it was about 10,000 words, then I ended up cutting more and more sections until it got to be about half of the darn thing. This is the first time I've ever done this huge of a rewrite. It's a big relief.

Anyways, I just had to share my joy about the whole thing. :)

Have any of you taken on a huge rewrite of your novels?

Don't take Things TOO Far...Things I Learned Writing My First MG

I was thinking about the very first middle grade novel I wrote and the things I learned from it. I actually learned a lot but there are a couple of things that really stuck with me.

#1. I wrote really long sentences. eesh! I learned that it's hard to retain what you're reading if you have really long sentences. If our minds have to cut through a jungle of words, we're not going to remember what we read. Or, maybe not even understand what's being conveyed in the story. Our brains really don't want to work that hard to break down a sentence and decipher it.

#2. I revised to the point of losing my characters voices. I received several critiques of my work. I think just about every one of them said something about shortening the sentences. I was so eager to fix this problem that I ended up taking my revisions too far the other way. I cut those sentences down so much they became short, blunt and they no longer flowed. At all. And besides that, I felt like my characters lost their voices.

The moral of this - don't take things too far the opposite way during revisions. :)

Happy Writing!

Webinar with Sara Megibow - How to Hook an Agent with Your Query Letter

There's another webinar coming up the end of this month that I think I might attend. The session is with Sara Megibow of the Nelson Literary Agency (I get their newsletters so that's how I know about these webinars she's been having).

Anyway, the webinar is on how to hook an Agent with your query letter AND she's going to critique your query letter after the session. Also, in the newsletter she says she's going to have some juicy details. Sounds awesome to me!

If anyone's interested in finding out more, here's the link.
