A to Z Blogging Challenge - J is for Just

I'm working off a theme and made it simple so that I can stick to the challenge, I hope. I'm posting a word that you might use in your writing and then I'm going to mention several other words that are potential candidates to use instead (but I'm not going to mention every possibility). So I'll be like your mini thesaurus for the month of April. Feel free to toss your own word out in the comments!

If you use just...

Consider using: almost, approximately, recently, barely, or nearly. (if you use it for time)

Happy writing and blogging!

  1. I love these Kimberly. I have another suggestion for JUST.

Just remove it. Try the sentence without, it will probably be stronger.

  2. I really overuse the word just. That and 'that' are the word I do a find search for after finishing a story.

  3. I've learned to cut SO many "just" out of my stories--it's one I tend to overuse, but I've become much more aware of it and gotten better about not using it so much. (Plus, like mood, it's one of the words I run a search for when I'm done with the book.) I often cut it out unless it REALLY adds to the sentence, or sometimes I replace it with "only" if it's the proper context.

    Thanks for the other synonyms!

  4. Great list. I'm guilty of overusing 'just' too. These are all good alternatives, and like the other commemters I try to remove it where possible.

  6. Becky's so right. :) I forgot to add that to my post like I did for 'but'. There are several words that we writers like to use that we should 'just' remove.

But I agree with Bekah, too. Sometimes you just gotta use it!! ;)

  7. Yup, good list of substitutions! Not that "just" is taboo, but yeah, spread it out and sub if ya hafta. ;o) Have a great week!
